Zero Waste Gift Wrapping | 6x Tips

Zero Waste Gift Wrapping | 6x Tips

A lot is wasted during the holidays. Also when packaging presents, a lot is unnecessarily thrown away, while this can easily be done differently! That is why I have 6 tips for gift wrapping without waste!

December is coming again. Or while, time for fun, traditions and of course gifts! All gingerbread cookies are as good as gone, and nothing else can be heard on the radio than Michael Bubble. Enough reasons to get into the Christmas mood.

Let’s do this!

1. Gift Wrapping with Towels

Instead of buying new wrapping paper, you can also choose for a handkerchief or tea towel! You can tie this around your gifts or wrap a gift as you normally would. To attach it you can use a piece of string instead of tape (which is plastico). Perfect for gift wrapping! You can give the towel as a gift (or ask it back after unpacking;) )

2. What’s in my garbage can?

Maybe a little crazy to look into your trash, but look at what’s in your paper bin. Maybe newspapers or cardboard boxes with which you can use for gift wrapping. This way it is used twice before it enters the trash! You can attach this by means of a string and a bow. You can also cut small cards from left-over paper to write a poem, message or name tag!

3. Forrest decoration!

If you go for a walk in nature, take a look around! Things like pine cones, pine branches, leaves, sticks and twigs serve well as decorations on presents! Certainly around the winter period this gives a lot of atmosphere and coziness. Everything you have found can also be attached to your presents with a string. How sweet?

4. Flowers

Maybe you have an old bouquet at home that has completely dried out. You can save the flowers and use them as decoration on the presents you are going to wrap. Also nice in a combo with an old newspaper as wrapping paper!

5. Let it snow! uh.. Dry!

To create a real Christmas atmosphere you can decorate presents with dried fruit! Super easy in just 3 steps! (Can also be used for tea from natural Christmas tree decorations;)

  1. Cut a citrus fruit into thin slices
  2. Bake the slices at 100 degrees in the oven for 3 hours on baking paper
  3. Let it cool down and poke a hole to put a piece of string through!

Okay, maybe not the most environmentally friendly tip to keep the oven on for 3 hours, but it is a natural way of decorating!

6. Organic, Reusable Wrapping Paper

If you are looking for a slightly less primitive alternative, you can opt for reusable wrapping paper. You can find this online at, for example Plastic Free Amsterdam, from Happy Wrapped. Wrapping paper is made from Organic Cotton. In addition, it is easy to use again! It is on the pricey side, so for a cheaper option you can opt for a tea towel or handkerchief (actually the same idea). Both a super alternative to wrapping gifts.
